AUCTION - LSD - Owsley Stanley - Grateful Dead - 1971 Sentence Data Summary Card - Very Good
What a unique piece we have on offer here. This is the Sentence Data Summary Card for none other than LSD pioneer Owsley Stanley. Stanley was arrested in 1969 and sentenced to three years in federal prison, namely Terminal Island in Los Angeles, CA. This card was kept on file and it contains a mugshot and all the pertinent information regarding Owsley’s offenses, sentencing date, time of his prison term, when his parole eligibility would come due and more. Perhaps most interestingly, he listed Grateful Dead, p.o. Box 598, Novato, Calf., 94947 as a contact address. This is, of course the band’s office address. Extraordinary. These cards were kept for all federal prisoners and this one was part of a large batch of them. Most fairly pedestrian criminals, but not this one, for sure. Prison is where Owsley learned metalworking, a skill he practiced after he got out. His Grateful Dead belt buckles and rings and more are all highly prized by collectors today. It is highly unlikely that a duplicate card exists, as these records were regularly purged and often simply destroyed after a certain amount of time.
This truly amazing piece of history measures 5 1/8” X 8” and is in fantastic condition, with edge wear and a little bending. Red ink underlines last name and inmate number at upper left. This card is packed with historical significance and marks a dark chapter in the life of an indomitable chemist and jeweler. The man who brought us Purple Haze and helped change the world one head at a time.
