AUCTION - Grateful Dead - Herb Greene & Alton Kelley Signed - Uncut Proof - Near Mint
This uncut proof is a magnificent collaboration between two major talents who emerged in the 1960s: Herb Green and Alton Kelley. Herb Greene took these iconic Grateful Dead photos in 1966 and boy do they look young! We have beardless Jerry Garcia in his North Beach Leather coat (one of his very first endorsements) on one side and possibly the quintessential Pigpen photo on the other. In the center, we have Phil, Billy, and Bobby looking downright cherubic. These three photos have been elegantly framed by Alton Kelley, replete with dead iconography. Very Egyptian look to the piece that really works, especially the quote from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, from which the band got their name. This proof has one large version of the image, along with three smaller versions at the bottom. Like a poster and three handbills. Done in 1996, this collaborative uncut proof is hand signed by both Alton Kelley and Herb Greene in pencil on the front, while Kelley has also signed on the reverse to his wife Marguerite. This proof comes from Alton Kelley's personal collection and measures 25" x 34". In Near Mint condition, with only light handling, owing to the size and having been signed three times. Magnificent.
