AUCTION - AOR Page 79 - Rick Griffin - 1967 2nd Print Poster - Psychedelic Shop - Near Mint
Offered here is an amazing Rick Griffin poster from an art show held at the Psychedelic Shop in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. The art show features the Jook Savages (Rick Griffin's band), and was held to commemorate the first anniversary of the store. This poster marked Griffin's expansion into the hippie art world, from which he would gain international acclaim. Known up to that point mainly as a surf artist and a well-established one, Griffin really pours it on, showing off his hippie best. The lettering is absolutely spectacular, even for Rick Griffin. The American Indian clip art is incredibly effective, but the border work is so masterful. It shows his love for 19 century engraved borders in books, stock certificates, and the like. A lesser-known masterpiece, whose famous cousin is the "Human Be-In" piece.
Featured in the Art of Rock book on page 79, this poster measures 13 15/16" x 19 3/8". The poster is a second printing by Berkeley Bonaparte but is copyrighted in 1967 just like the original. In Near Mint condition. Stunning.
