AUCTION - AOR 4.194 - John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Sinclair Freedom Rally - Gary Grimshaw - 1971 Poster - Crisler Arena - Very Good

This original concert poster from Michigan is offered for auction and was designed by the late, legendary, poster artist, Gary Grimshaw. This truly rare find is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 395, plate, 4.194. On December 10, 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made a one-of-a-kind appearance at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally held at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, MI. Lennon and Ono top the bill, along with a wide array of musicians, radical activists, and others, who gathered to support Sinclair, the influential, radical poet, music writer, manager of the MC5, founder, and leader of the White Panther Party and a tireless marijuana advocate, who had been sentenced to 10 years in jail for possessing two joints he gave to an undercover police officer. Musicians included Phil Ochs, Archie Shepp, Commander, Cody and His Lost Planet, Airmen, and a showstopping, unannounced appearance by Stevie Wonder. Allen Ginsberg, Jerry Rubin. Bobby Seale (Black Panthers) and Ed Sanders were among the featured speakers. What makes this piece so exceptional is that it is the ONLY appearance by John Lennon on a poster after the Beatles' break up. Although motivated personally, and politically to perform at the concert, Lennon paid a heavy price, because his participation triggered an intense, well-known investigation by the Feds. This soured Lennon on any future public appearances.

This historically important poster measures 17" x 22" approximately. Not long after the rally, John Sinclair was released from prison due to, in no small part, the attention drawn to his plight by popular activism like this event. The condition of the piece is Very Good. The poster comes rolled, has pinholes in the corners, edge wear, corner bends, tape pulls on reverse, and handling. Still presents quite well, with strong, vibrant colors. This really is the only John Lennon poster after the Beatles, so bid accordingly!
