Auction - FD-63, 67, 71 - The Charlatans - 1967 Triptych Poster Set - Avalon Ballroom - Near Mint Minus
This rather famous set of three Family Dog posters up for auction is quite extraordinary. Here we have three original 1st print posters, each one for the Charlatans at the Avalon Ballroom in 1967. Each one is for an engagement by the band in a different month, ranging from May to July. Arranged side-by-side the trio forms a triptych of sorts, with continuity provided by the stretching of the word "Charlatans" across the top of all three posters. Separately, we are left to wonder at the oversize letters, but together they make total sense. Astonishing design work by Rick Griffin, who did the first two pieces. Subsequent money disputes led Bob Fried, a relative newcomer at the time, to finish out the triptych. So he did. Quite well, as a matter of fact. Great band photos were done in period costumes with a sepia-tone effect. These posters are FD-63, 67, and 71, respectively in the Family Dog Series. Each one measures 14 1/8" x 21 7/8", approximately. This magnificent set of three Family Dog posters is in Near Mint Minus condition, with a few very small corner bends and light handling. A splendid example of an outstanding trio of well-known and desirable posters.
