AUCTION - AOR 2.8 - 1st Ever Family Dog - Tribute To Dr. Strange - 1965 Handbill - Longshoremen's Hall - Very Good
This handbill from the Family Dog is the fabled Tribute to Dr. Strange concert and also the very first Family Dog concert. The show date was October 16, 1965. The venue was the Longshoremen's Hall near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, CA. Billed also as a "Dance And Concert", the lineup was seminal: The Jefferson Airplane (with Signe Anderson still), The Charlatans, The Marbles, and The Great Society (with Grace Slick). Local fave, DJ Russ "The Moose" Syracuse was the MC as well. Wonderful artwork was done in-house by the Family Dog's own Alton Kelley, with the comic book inspiration coming from Family Dog cofounder Ellen Harmon. An altogether exciting layout, with lots of imaginative fonts, flames, and curlicues. This particular handbill was also hand-colored with a red marker. There is also a union bug bottom right. This exceedingly rare and important handbill measures 8 1/2" x 11". The condition is Very Good, with handling throughout, staple holes, tack holes (except in the upper right corner), toning, "1965" in pencil on the reverse, and a tear at the upper left corner, apparently due to a staple removal attempt, and edge tears. This piece is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 93, plate, 2.8. The importance of this handbill can't really be overstated, especially for Family Dog lovers. This is where it all began for the Family Dog. The rest is Music, history. Here is your chance to own a seminal piece of it.
