AUCTION - AOR 2.3 - Big Brother Janis Joplin - Grateful Dead - 1966 Handbill - California Hall - Excellent
We are offering an extremely rare, original concert handbill. This item is listed as number 2.3 in the Art of Rock book on page 90. It is known as a tour blank or concert blank. The black ink illustration, created by Dennis Nolan, is printed on the paper, while all other details—such as the date, location, and names of other bands—are added using rubber stamps and ink pads. This means each handbill is unique.
The handbill features Big Brother & the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin, who had just joined the band a little over a month earlier, along with the Charlatans and the Grateful Dead. The concert took place at California Hall. As of now, we haven't been able to confirm if the Grateful Dead performed at this event. This is the only handbill of its kind we have encountered in the last 35 years. Please note that this is a handbill only; no poster was printed for this event.
The date of the concert is July 28, 1966, and the handbill measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Its condition is excellent, although it does have a wrinkle in the upper left corner. Additionally, the leaves in the illustration have been hand-colored green. We have shown this item to other dealers and major collectors, and none have seen it before.
