AUCTION - BG-7/ BG-8 - Velvet Underground - Alternate 1966 Handbills (2) - Fillmore Auditorium - Excellent
AUCTION - BG-7/ BG-8 - Velvet Underground - Alternate 1966 Handbills (2) - Fillmore Auditorium - Excellent
This is an extremely rare set of handbills. It includes BG 7, which features Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Final Solution. This version is in black and white and has the union logo #221 in the lower right corner. Additionally, BG 7 is stapled to an alternate design handbill from BG 8, which features the Velvet Underground. This is particularly rare—it's only the second one we've seen in over 30 years. It includes a Los Angeles Times article by Kevin Thomas and calligraphy by Bonnie MacLean, and it is depicted in "The Art of the Fillmore" book on page 37.
These two handbills are stapled together, something we have never encountered before, except in Bill Graham's personal scrapbook, where he pasted posters, handbills, tickets, and more into a large portfolio. This indicates that they were distributed this way, although likely in small quantities. We are unsure just how many combinations like this exist, but we estimate there may be one or two others, though we have not seen any.
This particular set comes from the collection of Roy Loney, a founding member of the Flamin' Groovies. BG 7 measures approximately 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", while the BG 8 handbill measures approximately 7" x 8 1/2". The condition is excellent, though both handbills show some folds and signs of handling due to the staple. We believe you won't find another set like this.
