AUCTION - FD26 - Skelton & Roses - Nepalese Rice Paper Woodcut - Circa 1974 - Condition - Good

In the early 1970s former Velvet Underground member Angus McLea‘s and poet photographer Ira Cohen traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal where they became friends with a small group of hippie expatriates. The group became known as the Bardo Matrix and they formed a publishing outfit using this name. The press issued broadsides, pamphlets, and books printed using woodblocks and special inks on various Nepalese rice papers. They sold these items at the Spirit Catcher book shop that they operated near Jhocchen Tole ( popularly known as "Freak Street") in Kathmandu. Their publications often utilized images from comic books, pop culture, and the hippie counterculture. This Skeleton and Roses print is a perfect example of the Bardo Matrix appropriating one of the most recognizable and iconic images from the 60s counterculture. A rare piece of ephemera from this group of opium smoking hippies who were the center of an active expatriate scene in Kathmandu in the 1970s. This rice paper drawing is in good condition having been folded in four. It measures about 14 5/8 " x 18 1/2". There is obvious wear and some paper loss but it has survived a long journey and we are pleased to offer this for auction. It comes folded in fourths.
