AUCTION - AOR Pg. 245 - MC5 - Grimshaw Signed - 1967 Poster - See Theater - Near Mint Minus

Offered for auction is a very scarce poster from a short-lived venue in Detroit, Michigan, the See Theater. The poster features four upcoming shows, which ran through July 4th weekend, 1967. "The Union and the Constitution Forever", it says boldly and patriotically across the top of the poster, which is done in red, white, and blue. Artist Gary Grimshaw, himself a Detroit legendary radical, did a gorgeous job with the design and in particular, the lettering is outstanding. The MC5, Billy C and the Sunshine (soon to become Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen) and Seventh Seal are also listed as upcoming acts. Additionally, a poetry reading took place on July 4th. Add it all up and you've got Independence Day Weekend, counterculture style. The See Theater, alas, only lasted a few weeks and only two posters are known to have been made for the venue. This one is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 245 at left. As a bonus, Gary Grimshaw has hand signed this poster with elegant dignity in pencil at the bottom right. Measuring 15 1/8" x 20", the piece is in Near Mint Minus condition, with only handling around the edges. Lovely piece.
