AUCTION - AOR-2.2 - The Seed - Charlatans - 1966 Poster - Red Dog Saloon - Excellent

We are very excited to offer this extremely rare original concert poster. This is what's known as "The Seed". It's called that because it is widely considered the true beginning of the psychedelic poster scene. With its funny,hand-drawn lettering or the phrase "The Limit of the Marvelous", you get the feeling that this was aimed at a very specific audience. The band is the Charlatans, formed in 1965, and all of the members sporting long hair as well as wearing turn of the century clothing that no one else was wearing. Original hippies, long before the term ever existed.

This run of shows (over six weeks) was held at the infamous Red Dog Saloon located in the gold rush country in Virginia City, Nevada. Word spread up and down California and pretty soon people were coming to see what was happening. A lot of those people would soon form bands like Big Brother and Quicksilver or even start to draw posters like Alton Kelley. Even Rick Griffin came up from Los Angeles with friends to check out this scene. And so the "seed" was indeed planted in the summer of 1965. There are 2 versions.

This is the original, first version with the dates June 1-15,1965 at the bottom. Pictured in the Art of Rock book on page 90 plate 2.2, you will note how damaged and toned the one pictured in the book is. Nothing like how beautiful this one is. Measures 19" X 14". You will be hard-pressed to find an example of the Seed finer than this one. Condition Near Mint Minus to Excellent. Has a horizontal fold across the middle. There are no pinholes, no tape. It was never put up. The corners and edges
are sharp and the blue ink is bright. Clearly, the original owner in 1965 was given this and folded it to carry home and then laid it flat and kept it flat and clean ever since. A true cornerstone of the psychedelic poster collecting world.
