AUCTION - Political - Fifth Estate Issue #1 - 1965 Underground Newspaper - Detroit - Excellent
This underground newspaper up for auction is issue number one of the renowned Detroit newspaper, the 5th Estate. Billing itself as an alternative to the traditional 4th Estate press as a whole to provide a far-left "voice" in Detroit. Issue number one is pretty sparse, with only four pages. But they are chock full of goodies. From the Bob Dylan review to the March on Washington to the very significant labor movement article on the state of the grape boycott in 1965. All for 10 cents. The Fifth Estate grew from humble beginnings to be a real force in the Detroit area, with artists like Gary Grimshaw who later became the Fifth Estate's art director, on board. This very rare newspaper even has a Jules Feiffer cartoon at the top center of Page One. This inaugural issue of The Fifth Estate measures 11" x 17 7/16", unfolded. The condition of the newspaper is Excellent, with toning from age and light handling. The newspaper comes folded as issued. A very early, very scarce first issue of a soon-to-be mainstay of the Left in Detroit Michigan.
