AUCTION - FD-10 - Grateful Dead Hayfever - 1966 Handbill - Avalon Ballroom - Near Mint
AUCTION - FD-10 - Grateful Dead Hayfever - 1966 Handbill - Avalon Ballroom - Near Mint
Here is one of the toughest handbills to find in the Family Dog series, the FD 10 Hayfever handbill. Art by Wes Wilson. In the black and white handbill, we find the intricate line art to be inviting and trippy - much more compelling than the poster. The handbill is near mint - only a small printing flaw, a small blue dot in the V of Leaves, keeps this one from being mint. We have seen a couple of these over the years and this is still the best condition one that we have seen, ever.
Interesting early Family Dog Avalon Ballroom lineup with the Leaves headlining riding high on their hit single "Hey Joe." The Grateful Dead are the opening act on this bill, imagine that. In only their fifth set of dates since returning from the LA Acid Tests, this show marks the first time the Dead played for the Family Dog at the Avalon Ballroom. The Dog had taken up residence at the Avalon the month before and added the magic of Bill Ham's Light Show to their scene.
Beyond its importance as part of an FD set, this handbill is a super relic of that early 1966 psychedelic scene in San Francisco. We have seen at least one other copy of this handbill out there in lesser shape for well over $4,000. So, don't miss this chance to grab the best copy that we have handled in our decades working with this material (we sold this handbill to the consignor in 1992). A reasonable reserve has been placed on this item at the request of the consignor.
