AUCTION - AOR 4.194 - John Lennon Sinclair Freedom Rally - Grimshaw Signed - 1971 Poster - Crisler Arena - Excellent
This poster is for a rally to free John Sinclair and all political prisoners. Strong stuff, folks. Billed as the John Sinclair Freedom Rally and sponsored by the Friends of the Rainbow People, who were an umbrella organization organized by Sinclair. John had been sentenced to ten years for two joints. Ouch! Many benefit concerts were organized on his behalf, with this event representing a sort of pinnacle event and the lineup shows it. Jam-packed with both speakers and musical talent, this rally took place on December 10, 1971, at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Here are just a few of the speakers: Rennie Davis (SF Mime Troupe), Allen Ginsberg, Ed Sanders (Fugs), and Bobby Seale (Chicago Seven). Musical performers, not to be outdone, featured John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Friends, Archie Shepp, Phil Ochs, and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Artwork by the late Detroit revolutionary artist, Gary Grimshaw, who has hand signed this piece in a silver pen at the bottom right. This Freedom Rally poster measures approximately 17" X 22", and is in excellent condition with some restoration to repair corner tack holes and an edge tear. Now looks near mint. Featured in the Art of Rock book on plate 4.194, page 395.
