AUCTION - AOR 2.107 - Moby Grape - Heinrich Kley - 1966 Poster - The Matrix - Excellent
AUCTION - AOR 2.107 - Moby Grape - Heinrich Kley - 1966 Poster - The Matrix - Excellent
This is a rare and original concert poster from the Matrix in San Francisco, CA. Moby Grape performed for three nights, from December 6 to 8, 1966. At that time, Moby Grape had only been around for about two months. It is estimated that only about 500 of these posters were printed, while other posters from Bill Graham and Family Dog had print runs of 2,000 to 3,000 copies.
Heinrich Kley created the artwork on this poster and is quite similar to drawings found on other Matrix posters from that period. The design features a surreal depiction of a grape harvest led by a nude figure, who represents Mother Earth. At the bottom, there is a quote from the Koran: “There is a devil in every berry of the grape.”
This poster is featured in the book "The Art of Rock" on page 162, plate 2.107. It measures 14 3/16 inches by 20 inches and is in excellent condition. It has a single tack hole in each corner, a large bend in the upper right corner, and small bends in the lower corners.
