Offered here is the super rare, trophy poster A Tribute to Dr. Strange. This poster was created by Alton Kelley & Amy Magill for the first psychedelic dance concert & the very first Family Dog show. Held at Longshoreman’s Hall on October 16, 1965, this “Dance Concert” featured the Jefferson Airplane, the Charlatans, the Marbles, and the Great Society. Prior to this show, there were old fashioned sit-down concerts at large venues like the Cow Palace or small club shows, like those at the then recently opened Matrix club in San Francisco. But this show, and this poster, represent the start of the psychedelic dance and poster scene in San Francisco at the Fillmore and Avalon that captivated and electrified a generation. The Jefferson Airplane was barely two months into their musical journey. The Great Society, featuring Grace Slick, had just played their first gig earlier in October. And the Charlatans were coming back to San Francisco after their now-famous residency at the Red Dog Saloon in Nevada. The show was organized and produced by the Family Dog, a loose group of friends, many of whom were living at the “Dog” house on Pine Street in San Francisco. The poster is in very good condition and exhibits toning, has pinholes with old dry tape over them in the corners, and in the center top and bottom margins, There are also small bends in the corners. This is a fine example of an exceedingly rare and early poster.
