AUCTION - AOR 2.11 - Tribute to Sparkle Plenty - Lovin Spoonful - 1966 Handbill - Longshoremen's Hall - Good

Here we have one of the rarest of all the items associated with the San Francisco Psychedelic Scene - an original handbill for the Family Dog's 1965 Tribute to Sparkle Plenty.  This show was held at Longshoreman's Hall in San Francisco on October 24, 1965, featuring the Loving Spoonful, the Charlatans, and Larry Hankin.  This was the second of the three shows that the Family Dog put on in the fall of 1965. Think of it - this show was three months before the Trips Festival and the notion of regular 'Dance-Concerts' at the Fillmore or Avalon had not yet even occurred to Chet Helms or Bill Graham.

One cannot overstate the rarity of this item.  We have sold one just one of these before and that was in the 1990s. So, this makes two in 30 years of business.  And we know of just one other of these handbills that have changed hands during those decades.  If you collect Family Dog material or early artifacts of the San Francisco psychedelic world, this really is an ultimate SET Buster.

Ok, that's not all.  The few of these handbills that have survived are generally on yellow paper.
But this is the rare bluish-gray paper!  How cool is that!

The handbill features inviting and intriguing art by Alton Kelley, a key member of the Family Dog.  We particularly get a kick out of the drawing of Dick Tracy announcing "the Family Dog Presents."  The starbursts throughout announce that something different, unexpected, and shall we say "trippy" may be part of the scene at this event.

The handbill is in good condition.  There is a well-flattened centerfold, handling throughout, and tape at the top and bottom.  A crescent at the bottom (where "Clay" appears) has become detached but is present.  Overall, this handbill presents very well.

We do not expect to ever offer another one of these. So do not miss this opportunity!!
